Hermann & The Pink House

The client came with the idea of creating a memoriam to her father, Hermann; by combining two photographs taken at different times in front of his childhood home. Hermann grew up in Booborowie, about 200kms north of Adelaide, South Australia. The client snapped the first of the photographs with he standing in front ‘The Pink House’ before his passing, and then the second was taken upon the gathering of Hermann’s family at the same location to commemorate his life.

This was a brilliant notion that combined my fabled interests in family, heritage, architecture and the natural landscape. From the other photographs I saw of Hermann, I got the sense that he was a big bear of a man, strong with an inbuilt sense of style that many of his generation had available to them. The eucalypts in the background were a tantalising proposition - carefully filling out all their detail was a crucial component, adding a sense of scale and foreboding to the piece. It’s as much about recognising the trees and the environment as it is about Hermann. All components stand as testaments to longevity and rigour. Enduring the testing Australian environment with pride.

This piece was completed on Saunders 600gsm, hot pressed, smooth finished paper. Hand drawn from photograph, and inked with Pigma Micron archival ink pens and coloured with alcohol based Copic Ink Markers. Final drawing size - 60cm x 60cm.
